Offering Our Little to Jesus: Nothing Is Impossible for Him

Over the past several weeks I’ve been preparing for a transition from my current employment into something new and unknown. I’ve been praying, Lord, what do you want me to do? Where do I go next? How can I serve You in whatever is coming? I’ve been confused. I’ve been anxious at times. I’ve been looking for a certain type of job opportunity that just doesn’t seem to exist. And I’ve been reminding myself of the Lord’s past and continuing faithfulness knowing that somehow He’ll make a way.
Then today in my prayer time, out of the blue, it was like the Lord downloaded to my heart and mind what He would have me do. Something new. Something impactful. Something big…perhaps too big for a regular joe like myself. It’s the kind of idea that excites me with all the possibilities, but scares me by the financial investment required.
As doubts and fears began to curb my excitement and cloud my mind, the Lord brought to mind the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 from Matthew 14:13-21. A big crowd had gathered to see Jesus, and it was getting late. The disciples came to Jesus and suggested that He send the people away to buy food from the surrounding towns. But Jesus said, “They do not need to go away. You give the something to eat.” (v. 16).

The disciples must have been confused, astounded even. How could they ever afford the cost of food for 5,000 men plus women and children? So they showed Jesus all they had, perhaps in an effort to once again convince Jesus to send the people away because surely this measly amount of food couldn’t be enough. “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. But that small offering was more than enough for Jesus to work with. He multiplied it by the thousands and amply fed that hungry crowd, so much so that there were 12 basketfuls of leftovers.
How generous! How kind! How gracious! To supply this plentiful meal despite the disciples’ lack of faith.
I share this story to remind each of us that we serve a big God—a God who provides, who does miracles, who does more than we could ever think of or imagine. He is the same God now as He was then. Let’s continue to offer Him our small offerings—our five loaves and two fish—in faith. Maybe it's prayers of desperation as an infant or loved one fights for their life, or prayers for strength to survive another gruelling day, or taking that leap into something new that makes no earthly sense.
Let’s continue to petition the Lord to make a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland (Is. 43:19). Let's trust that the Lord will be with us through the waters, and will not let us be burned as we walk through the fire (Is. 43:2). Let’s pray and allow the Lord to birth new dreams and ministries to reach out to the lost. Praise be to the Lord of hosts, the Savior of our souls who can do all things!
Saving Nate Update (My Upcoming Book)
To make it fun, we each kept our favorite under wraps until everyone had had a chance to decide, then on the count of three we moved to the predetermined side of the living room that represented our choice. We were all surprised when seven made their way to one side of the room leaving only one lone person on the other, which led to a lively discussion as to the strengths and weaknesses of each design, and then I let my editor know which one I preferred.
Ultimately, the publisher will make the final decision, and I don't envy them that decision as I'm now wondering if I made the wrong call. I'm praying that the Lord gives them wisdom to choose the one that will most resonate with readers, and I can't wait for the big reveal!
