Do you remember Prince Caspian, the movie based on the fourth book in the Narnia series? Well into the film, the Narnians, under the leadership of Caspian, their rightful ruler, are in the midst of a bitter battle against the Telmarines led by his treacherous uncle. Now cue my favourite scene. Young Lucy, who has been on an adventure of her own, emerges at the edge forest and steps onto a long wooden bridge; facing her on the other side stands the Telmarine army in all their might. With a smile of complete calm and confidence, she draws a simple dagger. The soldiers shoot uneasy glances towards their leader, who hesitates, unsure whether to advance. And then we see him. Aslan. The great Lion, son of the Emperor-Over-the-Sea, allegorical representation of Jesus, approaching Lucy's side from behind in regal strength.
With one glimpse of Aslan, we viewers gain immediate understanding. In the presence of the all-powerful Lion, Lucy has nothing to fear. With Aslan on her side and at her literal side, she can face her opponents with unfaltering courage.
You know, we can have that very same assurance. Psalm 118:5-8 says:
“In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered me by setting me free.
The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
The LORD is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies.
It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.”
I encourage you today to remember that God is strong and mighty, worthy of our trust, and capable to save. Keep your eyes on him, cry out to him, and cling to him with all that you have. The LORD our God is good.
