Imagine a grocery store advertisement that trumpets: No money? No problem! Come have whatever you like—buy without money and without cost. Fine wine? You got it! Prime rib? It's yours. Come while quantities last.
We'd be skeptical to say the least. There must be a catch—no one just gives away good food and drink.
Amazingly, God gives us an astonishing invitation like the one above. Isaiah 55:1-2 says:
“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.”
The Lord, in his incredible love, grace and mercy, offers us spiritual food and drink, sustenance that satisfies the soul. He knows that the only thing that will truly satisfy us and bring us peace is himself, not the accolades of others, not the comforts and delights of the world, not whatever “thing” we think will do the trick.
But just as those store quantities won't last forever, verse 6-7 says:
“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.”
Are you thirsty? Is your soul hungering for something no earthly thing can quench? Maybe you've been a Christian for years, but it's been a while since you last enjoyed the closeness of friendship and intimacy with Jesus. Call on the Lord while he's near—respond to his gentle tug on your heart. His desire is for you to live life to the fullest as described in verse 12:
“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”
What an invitation, one that isn't too good to be true! May we each choose to accept it and be filled day after day with food for our souls.
Blessings,
Christin
