A Well-Watered Life: Trusting and Flourishing in Jesus

Every time I visit my husband's native land of Brazil, I marvel as my eye beholds its lush vegetation at every turn. Have you ever seen a well-watered tree in a flourishing land? It stands tall and strong. Its leaves verdant, its flowers fragrant, its fruit vibrant.

Jeremiah 17: 7-8 speaks of a person like such a tree:

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

whose trust is the Lord.

He is like a tree planted by water,

that sends out its roots by the stream,

and does not fear when heat comes,

for its leaves remain green,

and is not anxious in the year of drought,

for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

Jesus tells us that He is the living water (John 4:10-13). As we place our trust in Him and abide in Him day by day, like the tree, we can soak up His strength, His hope, His peace, His courage, and His life. And when the trials of life come, as they inevitably do, we won't wither up and die; instead, we'll continue drawing from the never-ending, life-giving flow of the Spirit and survive. In the same way, when drought comes—be it economic insecurity, loss of income, needs both big and small—the Lord sustains us and makes a way where there seems to be no way.

I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty incredible that Jesus preserves us so thoroughly when we put our trust in Him. Equally amazing is that this state of being is open to each of us, no matter our past, no matter our failings. I encourage you today to draw near to Jesus; commit to spend time with Him daily in prayer and in the Word. As I have been making this a practice in my own life, I have been experiencing the peace of Christ and the flourishing that comes from a well-watered life. I pray that you will too.

Many blessings,

Christin
